So this worked but what a fuss. Other apps just have a setting you can check to say start this sucker when I boot up. I know this is a bit old, but since I haven't found a solution anywhere else, I'll post how I've done this. The Trello app has the Window Style options in the Preferences little gear in the top right corner , which allows you to select Tray icon only.
This way even if you close the app it remains opened in the system tray. Drag and drop of the Trello tile to the starup folder is not working. Not sure how to make it work. It's Friday!!!
